A lot of DIY jobs around the home require a drill. It is not a difficult DIY task but the choice of drill bit is vital to make the task easier and achieve a quality finish.
Here is a guide to the common types of bits that we stock in the hardware store at our timber and builders merchant based in Deddington.
Masonry bits
Masonry bits have a toughened cutting tip fixed to a steel shaft which are generally used in a hammer drill. The hammer action bashes the tip into the sub-surface breaking the masonry then the flutes clear away the debris. Masonry bits are available with standard shanks or SDS shanks. Ideal for all types of masonry such as, brick, concrete and stone.
HSS twist bits
HSS twist bits have two front cutting edges then the spiral flutes remove the debris. HSS bits are a general purpose bit suitable for most materials such as timber, metal and plastic. HSS bits are ideal for small holes.
Bits for timber
Brad point bits
Brad point bits have a long centre-point and two pre-cutting spurs which score the wood allowing the cutting edges to cut out cleanly through the flutes. Brad point bits are a great general purpose wood bit and are ideal for small and medium holes.
Flat wood bits
Flat wood bits have a centre-point and flat side to cut out the timber which gives a flat bottomed hole with a centre-point. Flat wood bits are ideal for larger holes where a flat bottom is required.
Auger bits
Auger bits have a threaded centre point, a single cutting spur and a flat cutting edge. The centre point grabs the wood and pulls the bit through the timber. The single spur cuts the edge of the hole then the flat cutting edge cuts and cleans out the hole through the flutes. Auger bits are ideal for deep, large diameter holes.
